Adel Abdessemed

°1971, Constantine (Algeria) - lives and works in Paris (FR) and London (UK)

Adel Abdessemed is a conceptual artist who works in a broad range of media including drawing, video, photography, performance and sculpture. Working with familiar materials and images, Abdessemed manipulates them to create unexpected works with charged socio-political statements. Drawing on personal, political, and historical narratives, Abdessemed reflects upon the increasing globalization of the world, the way that it impacts an individual’s sense of self often addressing social taboos and presenting them as raw and uncomfortable truths.

Abdessemed has had numerous solo exhibitions at major institutions including Arab Museum of Modern Art, Qatar; David Zwirner, New York; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; MoMA PS1, New York; Contemporary Art Centre of Malaga; and the Musée d’art moderne et contemporain, Geneva. His work was also part of group exhibitions at venues such as LACMA, Los Angeles; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; S.M.A.K., Ghent; KW, Berlin; Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin and FRAC, Nord-Pas de Calais.
