about this work
Sam Durant’s new edition brings renewed urgency to a message that has echoed across generations of activism: ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE. Popularized during the anti-globalization movements of the 1990s and amplified by the World Social Forum, the phrase has long served as a guidepost for those seeking change. Durant uses it here not as nostalgia but as a reminder that today’s visions for justice and transformation are built upon decades of collective struggle. By invoking this lineage, he encourages us to recognize our place within it—and to continue pushing toward a more hopeful future.
This work marks the third installment in a series where Durant experiments with materials beyond his usual forms. In this edition, he translates a hand-drawn protest sign into a sculptural thermoformed panel, a medium historically associated with commercial signage from the 1960s onward. The materiality subtly nods to Marcel Broodthaers’s Industrial Poems, which employed similar production methods to blur the boundaries between art, language, and mass communication.
Handmade protest placards have long been central to Durant’s practice. He finds them in photographs of street demonstrations and translates these pancartes into drawings, stencils, thermoformed works, and light boxes. Durant found this version of the phrase Another World is Possible on a sign at an anti-Trump demonstration in Philadelphia in 2016, where thousands gathered to voice resistance in the wake of the election. In today’s climate, the message once again invites us to question the status quo, while reminding us that through collective imagination and action we have the power to help bring that other world into being.
This edition comes unframed. You can choose to have it framed in a blue box frame – as pictured – and we’ll take care of that for you. Select an option when adding to your basket.
about Sam Durant
Sam Durant is a multimedia artist whose works engage a variety of social, political, and cultural issues. Often referencing American history, his work explores the varying relationships between culture and politics, engaging subjects as diverse as the civil rights movement, southern rock music, and modernism.
Over the last twenty years, Durant has mined the image archives of international protests and demonstrations, from the early twentieth century to the present, as sources for drawings and large-scale lightbox signs. In the lightboxes, hand-drawn statements are transferred from the source photographs into a format typically associated with commercial signage and advertising. Spontaneous, rapid and subjective messages are transmitted through an informational display mode; and yet the statements achieve new urgency and power from their dispassionate conveyance. Durant channels and enhances the contrarianism, humour, utopianism or challenge embedded in each handwritten slogan. The tension between emotive content and minimalist form expands the meaning of each text – opening it to different inferences and possibilities.
