about this work

Linder Sterling says about this edition: “It is so important that all children get to experience art and have the opportunity to express themselves creatively. With the focus in schools being on more academic subjects, it is wonderful that The Hepworth Wakefield has established this programme to help teachers incorporate creativity across the curriculum and that is why I was delighted to take part.”

This edition is part of School Prints, an ambitious five-year project launched by The Hepworth Wakefield, to engage every primary school child in Wakefield District with contemporary art. Each year, the participating schools are gifted a set of limited-edition prints by leading contemporary artists for display in school and are supported with an in-depth engagement programme led by local artists to encourage creativity across the curriculum.

about Linder Sterling

Linder Sterling is known for her photography, radical feminist photomontage and confrontational performance art. Emerging from the Manchester punk and post-punk scenes in the 1970s, Linder focuses on questions of gender, commodity and display. Her photomontage practice combines everyday images from domestic or fashion magazines with images from pornography and other archival material. Cut and collaged by hand using a scalpel and glue, the juxtapositions recall a rich art history harking back to Hannah Hoch and the Dadaists.

Linder’s work has been exhibited widely, including recent solo exhibitions at Hatton Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne; Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge; Chatsworth House, Derbyshire; Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham; Art On The Underground, London; Blum & Poe, Los Angeles; Tate St. Ives; Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, and MoMA PS1, New York. In 2021, Linder was included in the Liverpool Biennial, Liverpool, UK. Femme/objet, her comprehensive retrospective, travelled from the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris to the Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover
