Jakub Julian Ziółkowski’s work depicts an imaginary world filled with narrative elements, details, emotions and obsessions. The canvases are packed with patterns and have a disorienting, hallucinatory quality. The artist draws his inspiration from several elements, from abstract geometric art to Street Art, from the cartoonish world of Philip Guston to Hieronymus Bosch or Robert Crumb.

Ziółkowski’s practice is akin to a bestiary of life, wherein every emotion is metamorphosed into a memorable form: animal, mineral, vegetable and galactic. The viewers are invited to confront this visual onslaught and make what they may from its sensual and grotesque cacophony. Yet, to define the artist’s work as a pulsating mass of impulsive chaos would mean to ignore the impact of his approach.

Jakub Julian Ziółkowski’s solo exhibitions include Hauser & Wirth, New York, Zurich & London; Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva; Parasol Unit, London; Foksal Gallery Foundation, Warsaw; and the Academy of Fine Arts, Krakow.
He participated in numerous group shows at international institutions, including Camden Arts Centre, London; Deutsche Bank KunstHalle, Berlin; Office Baroque Gallery, Antwerp; New Museum in New York; and he took part in the 8th Gwangju Biennale in 2010 and in the 2nd Athens Biennale in 2009.
