Gideon Kiefer
°1970, Neerpelt (BE) – lives and works in Sint-Martens-Latem (BE)
In his drawing and paintings, Gideon Kiefer creates a very distinctive universe filled with intimate and peculiar scenes. These images are a symbiosis of reality and the imaginary, based on the artist’s childhood memories growing up in the rural countryside – and his distrust towards the accuracy of these memories.
Kiefer often shuns traditional supports, opting instead for the interior of old bookcovers for this drawings and multiplex panels for his paintings. The images he creates are generally composed of various elements such as hyperrealisticly painted or drawn details, handewritten text, gemetrical shapes and flashes of fluo colours. The scenes he depict balance between his own intimate memories – going back to his childhood in de forests, fields and nature around Neerpelt – and a more poetically expressed critical reflections on social issues and the current state of the world.
Gideon Kiefer has shown his work internationally, with exhibitions at Be-Part, Kortrijk; Geukens & De Vil, Antwerp; UNC Gallery, Seoul; Museum Dr. Guislain, Ghent; De Warande, Turnhout; Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurle; De Garage, Mechelen; GUM, Ghent; KMSK, Brussels, and C-Mine, Genk.
