Erik Van Lieshout

°1968, Deurne (NL) – lives and works in Rotterdam (NL)

Erik van Lieshout creates multimedia installations encompassing video presented in specially built rooms, which is frequently encircled by collages of drawings and paintings. He addresses a multitude of contemporary socio-political issues such as multiculturalism, right-wing thoughts and ideas, the position of minorities and outsiders, as well as the modern consumer society. Van Lieshout looks at these issues from a radically personal point of view, putting himself into the actual environment. By typically not adapting to the general behavior of his surroundings, he becomes an active player, which causes many humoristic situations but also provokes strong reactions.

Erik van Lieshout has had several solo exhibitions at important international institutions including Tate Modern, London; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; MMK, Frankfurt; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; Hayward Gallery, London; Ludwig Museum, Cologne; and Museum Boijmans Van Beunigen, Rotterdam.

His work was also featured at numerous group shows including the Tessaloniki Biennale in 2015; Political Populism at Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; MoMA, New York; FRAC – Nord-Pas de Calais, Dunkerque; Manifesta 10 (curated by Kasper König), St. Petersburg; Witte de With, Rotterdam; Moscow Biennale in 2013; the 55th Biennale of Venice in 2013; the Colombo Art Biennale; and Art Unlimited at Basel in 2011.

Van Lieshout’s work is represented in many international public and private collections including Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; MoMA, New York; Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam; and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
