Carla Arocha & Stéphane Schraenen
°1961, Caracas (VE) – lives and works in Antwerp (BE) / °1971, Antwerp (BE) – lives and works in Antwerp (BE)
The collaboration between Belgian artist Stéphane Schraenen and Venozolean artist Carla Arocha began in 2005. Their works evoke many relationships with preceding movements in art, mostly related to Modernism (e.g. Minimalism, etc.) and its progeny later in the 20th century (Op Art, etc.). Their installation sculptures are flat and composed of many small components, but they can be perceived as monumental and emphatic.
Carla Arocha & Stéphane Schraenen have had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at FRAC Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand and CAB de Burgos, Burgos, amongst others. They have also shown work in several group exhibitions at venues such as Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis; Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Brussels; National Art Museum of China, Bejing; and Parasol Unit, London.
Their work is present in many important public collections such as MoMA, New York; MCA, Chicago; M HKA, Antwerp; and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.
