Armando Andrade Tudela

°1975, Lima (PE) – lives and works in Saint Etienne (FR) and Berlin (DE)

Born in Peru, living and working in European cities such as London, Maastricht, St Etienne and Berlin, Armando Andrade Tudela often explores this theme of displacement in his work. Inspired by his extensive travels and interest in cultural absorption, he recombines existing and imagined forms out of a growing interest in local manifestations of the informal that occur on the precarious boundary between the historic and the new.

His Camion series of 2003 plays into these crossing, comprising sixty 35mm slides each documenting a truck seen by the artist on his numerous road trips on Peruvian highways. These records of the phenomenon of abstract murals painted on trucks, echo design aspects from different European artists, which Tudela highlights in order to explore the overlapping histories through which images are generated, translated and interpreted.

Tudela had solo exhibitions including shows at Kunstlerhaus Bremen; Fortes Vilaça, São Paolo; Museu d’ Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Barcelona and Kunsthalle Basel. His work has been shown in several group exhibitions, such as the Contemporary Art Center, Vilnius, Estonia; Centre Pompidou, Paris and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.
