about this work

This edition relates to a series of works produced for Pulitzer’s solo exhibition The Premise of a Better Life at Kunsthaus Glarus. The edition, as with the larger series, subtitles a landscape from Pulitzer’s home city, New York, with a pointed, direct question; here, “Have you known better but never bothered to protest?”. There is uncertainty at whom the question is aimed – the viewer, the artist, their peers? The individual, the collective? This indeterminacy, married with the city-scape, provokes questions of individual existence within society; what sort of life do we lead, what life do we want to be leading?

about Sam Pulitzer

Sam Pulitzer works predominantly with drawing, photography and installation, which are consistently coupled with written text. Often centred around ideas of insider/outsider-ism, distance, gaps and voids, his works often call into question the construction of authorship, in particular within the art world.
