about this work
Materials have a starring role in Jose Dávila’s work and are presented here with a special focus. Joint Effort 1, 2 and 3 are a photo edition series, which show show a detailed view of the materials` fragmentary condition and their contrasting traits. The ratchet and the straps, present throughout his work in most recent years, are what remains after the translation of sketches into three-dimensional works. The remnant of that sketch on paper is transformed into a colorful feature that literally holds everything in place.
Available as a single or a set of 3 archival pigment prints.
about Jose Dávila
Jose Dávila uses appropriation and recontextualization of iconic artworks to question how we recognize and relate visually. His works originate from the historic languages that are part of art history and Western visual culture. These pictorial, graphic and sculptural languages are translated and edited: materials are modified, formal elements are highlighted or concealed, and these existing visual languages are reproduced – with local resources and within a contemporary context.
Dávila’s sculptural work is based on the specificity of the employed materials: their origin, symbolic value and their formal characteristics are elements that take great significance. Influenced by his education in architecture, Dávila arranges objects as if they were basic elements of drawing (such as a point, a line or a plane). He uses these compositions of objects to create a system that exemplify notions of equilibrium, stability and permanence.
