With Subconscious Society (still) (2012), Rosa Barba has made a still from one of her films for the very first time. What can be seen is the aerial view of a southern English fenland at low tide. The individual image, which allows visual narration in the film by means of linkage, here becomes an abstract soloist, in which grassy surfaces and empty channels produce a mysterious ornament.

Rosa Barba is one of the most notable artists of her generation working in the area of film. Barba focuses on the trail of the phenomena, curiosities and stories of the world, spanning a universe of characters between fact and fiction. Not only does she stage stories in film, Barba also manifests the carrier of the medium that helps them to become visible. She always uses traditional recording techniques and presents her contemplative recordings using film and antiquated projectors. In this way, a dense structure of narration, presentation and reception emerges.
Barba has exhibited extensively internationally, including solo shows at Tate Modern, London; MAXXI, Rome; Dia Art Foundation, New York; and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. Apart from numerous international group exhibitions, she has also participated in the 52nd, 53rd and 56th La Biennale di Venezia; the Liverpool Biennale in 2010; the 2nd Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary; and the Biennial of Sydney in 2014.
Her work belongs to many important public collections, such as Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; Louisiana, Humlebæk; Reina Sofia, Madrid.
