over dit werk
As part of his solo at KIOSK, Christoph Meier presented as series of perforated sculptures. These play with imaginary spaces and in-between forms, and have both minimalist and complex, unique and serial, and distant yet engaged characteristics. Meier wants to keep his ‘social forms’ in constant movement, in conversation, and consequently also in a certain sense incomplete. He hopes to see them separate away from what they are and, together with the visitors, reach out in search of what they could be. They sculptures at KIOSK consequently became table, pedestal, a thing to hold on to, or a stage – in short, carriers of meaning open to dialogue.
The sculptures that form this edition related to the this series, as they are composed of the aluminium positives that remain after creating the performed sculptures.
Each unique edition consists of a sculpture made of these aluminium disks and a photograph, presenting a possible form of showcasing the sculpture.
over Christoph Meier
Christoph Meier’s practice investigates the exhibition context as a space for social interaction, and the way in which it produces and presents contemporary art. He searches for intermediate forms that accentuate the space but also, simultaneously, question it. This often results in invasive or absurdist interventions that create a tension between the existing institutional space and the architectural and/or sculptural work that the artist confronts it with.
Recent solo exhibitions include Kunstverein, Hamburg; Secession, Vienna; Kunsthaus Graz; Kiosk, Ghent; and Casino Luxembourg. Meier’s work was included in group exhibitions held, between other venues, at Frac Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand; Portland Institute for Contemporary Art; Nam June Paik Art Center, Seoul; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; and MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles.
