Amalia Pica uses sculpture, drawing, performance, installation and large-scale photographic prints to explore the notion of metaphor, the nuances of communication and civic participation. Using simple or found materials (photocopies, light bulbs, drinking glasses, beer bottles, cardboard), Pica creates work that addresses fundamental issues of communication (e.g. delivering and receiving verbal or nonverbal messages, etc.). Influenced by her upbringing in Argentina, Pica’s work raises questions about the contrast between individual and collective speech in the context of extreme political situations (e.g. Argentina in the 1970s). As such, Pica is particularly attracted to the limits and failures (gaps, slippages, etc.) of language and in the translation of thought to action (or idea to object).
Recent solo exhibitions of Amalia Pica include MCA, Chicago; MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge; Kunsthalle, Lisbon; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; Museo Tamayo, Mexico City; Chisenhale Gallery, London; Kunsthalle, Sankt Gallen; and Konsthall, Malmo. Pica also participated in numerous group exhibitions at international institutions, including The Ungovernables at the New Museum, New York; Serpentine Gallery, London; Kunsthalle, Basel; Tate Modern Project Space, London; and Royal College of Art, London. She also participated in the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011.
Her work is part of the collection of Guggenheim, New York; Fundação de Serralves, Porto; and Zabludowicz Collection, London, among others. One of the most promising artists of her generation, she is a recipient of a CIFO grant from the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation; a finalist for the Future Generation Art Prize of the Pinchuk Foundation, Kiev; and completed an artist-in-residence at the prestigious Headlands Center for the Arts outside of San Francisco. She was also awarded The Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Artists in 2011.
