Carlotta Bailly-Borg
°1984, France - lives and works in Brussels (BE)
Carlotta Bailly-Borg creates a visual universe that shifts between the fantastical and the everyday. Her practice spans painting, ceramics, fresco and drawing, and is filled with hybrid figures whose bodies bend, stretch and merge. These figures suggest desire, transformation and the fluidity of identity. They feel rooted in the present while also recalling the stylised imagery of medieval manuscripts, mythological scenes and early ornament.
Carlotta Bailly-Borg draws on a wide range of references, from art history to popular culture, and often works with humour and play. She uses bold contours and inventive compositions to create scenes that are strange yet poetic, inviting viewers to step into a world where forms resist fixed meaning. Her figures seem to hold stories that are open-ended, encouraging us to imagine what lies between them or beyond the frame.
Carlotta Bailly-Borg has presented her work internationally in solo exhibitions including at Ruttkowski68, New York; Etablissement d’en face, Brussels; Nevven, Göteburg; Praz Delavallade, Paris; and Beursschouwburg, Brussels. Group shows include Villa Medicis, Rome; FRAC Ile-de-France, Paris; Netwerk, Aalst; Fondation Ricard, Paris; Fondation Van Gogh, Arles; South London Gallery, London; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; and the Baltic Triennial. Her work is currently also on view at S.M.AK., Ghent as part of the large retrospective exhibition Painting After Painting.
