about this work

This edition is a diptych of an urban landscape that is an astonishing visual example of Iran’s orientation on Western architectural traditions—colorful billboards, a beltway, and apartment blocks that look as if they could be located anywhere in the world.

For this project, Walter Niedermayr traveled between 2005 and 2008 to Teheran, Isfahan, Yazd, Shiraz, and other smaller cities and historical sites in Iran. His excursions led to the creation of a new group of works in which he examines various aspects of contemporary Iranian architecture in their cultural and historical context.

about Walter Niedermayr

Walter Niedermayr is one of the great European photographic artists of our time. His sensitive visual language – which has been copied by countless other photographers in recent years – is marked by its subtle blend of colors. Niedermayr became familiar to a larger public through his series on Alpine landscapes, architecture, and infrastructures.

Since 1985 Walter Niedermayr has been developing projects where he investigated the space as a reality occupied and shaped by man, questioning the apparently secondary realms between representation and imagination. This body of work consists of the series of works Alpine Landschaften (Alpine Landscapes) started 1987, Raumfolgen (Space Con / Sequences) started 1991, Rohbauten (Shell Constructions) started 1997, Artefakte (Artifacts) started 1992, Bildraum (Image-Space) since 2001. In the time span 2005-2008 took place the series Iran, while 2009/2010 he has been working on The Aspen Series. 2012 he starts a news series: Portraits.
