about this work

Wineke Gartz created a collage combining documents from Witte de With’s archive and images of her own work, transforming the archive into an image stream rather than an organized system. Prominently featured are archival letters and drawings by artist Paul Thek, to whom Witte de With dedicated the solo exhibition Paul Thek: The Wonderful World That Almost Was (1995). Gartz strongly relates to Thek’s practice, which she sees as a form of exorcism, dealing with the labyrinths of spirituality, sexuality and technological progress.

This edition is part of a set that was produced in the context of Witte de With’s In Light Of 25 Years. On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, Witte de With examined its history, dedicating its ground-floor gallery to a series of commissioned presentations by a select group of contemporary artists. Each participant created an image-based work that analyzed certain sediments of contemporary art history. Presented on a large-scale double-sided light box these anniversary commissions were visible to the city day and night. Throughout 2015, In Light Of 25 Years functioned as a space for artists and curators to respond to developments in contemporary art, its landscape and possibilities, departing from Witte de With’s past program.

WDWXXV brings together the ten In Light Of 25 Years commissions. Presented in a slim Plexiglas box frame, inspired by the light box itself, this limited edition portfolio features ten high quality prints by the participating artists Özlem AltinWineke GartzCamille HenrotGermaine KruipMahonyRaimundas MalašauskasZin TaylorFreek WambacqLawrence Weiner, and Xu Zhen. about Wineke Gartz

Wineke Gartz is an installation artist who is fascinated by the constantly shifting meaning of the photographed, projected and copied image – especially, how the image is received, remembered or forgotten – and its relation to the body and mind within time and (architectural) space. Her subjects relate to psychology, beauty, death, illusions, perception, art, mass media, and nature versus urban life.

Gartz works in situ to compose her installations. Depending on the project and the space, she uses mirrors, glass, as well as designing special screens, minimal objects or structures in the architecture, which are used to display and project images onto.
