Nicolas Deshayes’ limited edition Blueprint for Flints in Gluten (2013) was produced on the occasion of his major solo exhibition at S1 Artspace. Crude Oil presents newly commissioned work by Deshayes alongside a personal selection of historical works from the Leeds Museums and Galleries sculpture collection. The two octopuses depicted here are taken from test prints which Deshayes’ produced by pressing real octopi onto paper, allowing their ink to leave an imprint on the page.
over Nicolas Deshayes
Drawn to materials due to their synthetic connotations, Nicolas Deshayes selects processes that exist in the manufacturing world for the purpose of prototyping, packaging and reproduction. From these he creates and moulds organic forms and surfaces, which relate directly to the natural world and more specifically the human body. Through a confrontation of the supposedly natural and un-natural, Deshayes distorts our sense and recognition of the everyday. By operating at the transitional state between liquid and solid, his work provokes questions about our response to images and material that can rapidly transform from seduction to repulsion.
Nicolas Deshayes has had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at Brand New Gallery, Milan; Glasgow Sculpture Studios, Glasgow; and Transmission Gallery, Glasgow. His work was featured in several group exhibitions at venues such as Tate, St. Ives; David Roberts Art Foundation, London; Saatchi Gallery, London; and South London Gallery, London.
