about this work

Verspätete Sitzung is based on a painting Kati Heck made in 2019 with the same title. The painting depicts the artist with four hands and a sunflower. For this edition, Kati Heck painted an abstract background with a sunflower dipped in yellow and brown oil paint. On top of that, a self-portrait was printed using an artisanal block print technique. The hand-transferred red letters refer to the exclamation of a crowing rooster, and are slightly different for each edition. Finally, Kati Heck drew a telephone, red lips, and blue tears on each work by hand. The work is offered with sunflower yellow passe-partout in a dark stained oak frame - as decided by the artist.

Each edition comes with a copy of Kati Heck's new book Hauruck, published by Hannibal Publishing.

about Kati Heck

Kati Heck is to be considered an heiress to German Expressionism. One is reminded of the bars, dancers and actors of Otto Dix and George Grosz, at the same time as the Old Masters. Heck synthesizes and fuses styles. She is as much an abstractionist as a realist. Parts of her paintings are meticulously rendered on her stitched canvases, with a unique virtuosity and acute attention to detail, while others look streaked, smeared and sculpted as in 'O Romain'. You can find reflections of Robert Rauschenberg, the way she combines non-traditional materials and everyday objects in innovative combinations. She challenges the medium of paint on a completely new level, as a gesture toward unabashed self-assertion and its radical effects. As the artist states, "I always opt to use more paint, it helps me move away from realism and towards total freedom."

Kati Heck has had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at CAC Malaga; Museum Het Domein, Sittard and Mary Boone Gallery, New York. She currently has a show at Corbett vs. Dempsey, Chicago; and has a big solo exhibition planned at M HKA, Antwerp for early 2016.

Her work has been shown in several group exhibitions at venues such as Saatchi Gallery, London; National Art Museum of China, Beijing; Middelheim Museum, Antwerp; The Agency, London and BOZAR, Brussels.
