Figures (Still)

Figures (Still), 2016 - Isabelle Cornaro

about this work

Isabelle Cornaro works with painting, sculpture, film and installation, to explore the influence of history and culture on our perception of reality. As a trained art historian specialising in 16th-century European Mannerism, her visual language draws on a wide array of references from the Baroque to modernist abstraction. In her work Cornaro uses found objects imbued with symbolic potential or emotional value, which she presents in different types of display and media to reveal the subtle shifts of meaning provoked by processes of reproduction and translation. This edition was produced to mark Cornaro’s solo exhibition at the gallery in 2015 which included a presentation of the film Figures, 2011.

about Isabelle Cornaro

°1974, Aurillac (FR) – lives and works in Paris (FR)

Isabelle Cornaro employs painting, sculpture, installation, and film in her quest to challenge the way viewers perceive reality, dictated historically and culturally. As such Cornaro plays with the aesthetics of both everyday objects and artworks by integrating them formally or conceptually into a new context, with great sensitivity to texture, material and colour. Cornaro is an art historian specialized in sixteenth and seventeenth-century Western art, therefore her work is strongly associated with the forms and compositions from the past, ranging from the baroque or classicism to modernistic abstraction.

Isabelle Cornaro has had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; White Cube, London; and Museum M, Leuven. Her work has been shown in several group exhibitions at venues such as Musée du Louvre, Paris; Drawing Center, New York; and Tate Modern, London. She also participated at the Sharjah Biennial in 2011. Her work is represented in many important public collections such as Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Gamec, Bergamo; and Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris.
