about this work

Inventario (Principios Activos A-Z) (2008), consisting of a list concerning active substances in medicine, is a typical example of Ignasi Aballí’s need to classify and order; perhaps the most intrinsic characteristic in his work. Aballí is an artist who collects, draws up an inventory and meticulously assembles pieces of information from newspapers and compiles captured images ad infinitum. Inventario (Principios Activos A-Z) was published by Meessen De Clercq in Brussels.

about Ignasi Aballí

In his work, Ignasi Aballí offers a conceptual reflection on the perception of mediums such as painting, sculpture, installation, photography, film and video. He started in the 1980s with the inventing and reorganising of texts, images, materials and processes, to relate the overabundance of images in modern-day society to the lack of meaning we assign to them. As such, the analysis of language and, more specifically, the relationship between text and image or between objects and the terms that define them, is central to the work of Aballí. Furthermore, he explores contradictions as presence and absence, materiality and immateriality, visibility and invisibility, transparency and opaqueness, appropriation and creation, resulting in works where he insinuates more than he affirms.

Ignasi Aballì has had numerous solo exhibitions at several international venues, including Museo Serralves, Porto; Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo; Today Art Museum, Beijing; KRAM, Illinois; Fundacio Joan Miró, Barcelona; ZKM, Karlsruhe; IKON Gallery, Birmingham; and MACBA, Barcelona.
His work has also been shown in several group exhibitions, including Especies de Espacios at MACBA, Barcelona; Explosion. Action in painting at Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Gathered Fates at Galerie Nordenhake, Berlin; Kunsthalle Mulhouse; CA2M, Madrid; CGAC, Santiago de Compostela; Museum of Contemporary Art, Utah; and IMMA, Dublin. He also participated the 52th Venice Bienale in 2007; the 8th Sharjah Biennial in 2007; and the 4th Guangzhou Triennial in 2012.

His work is also represented in many important collections, including MACBA, Barcelona; CAAC, Seville; Collecció Centre d´Art La Panera, Lleida; Escuela Frederic Mistral, Barcelona; Spain Bank of Spain; Collection 9 ART, Barcelona; CAM Collection, Valencia; Ellipse Foundatio-Contemporary Art Collection, Cascais.
