about this work

Documentation of ‘Stepping Down’ (2012) depicts Butha's dramatic and impressive site-specific installation Stepping down (2010) she created for the group exhibition Lines of Thought. This expo at Parasol Unit brought together 15 artists whose practice has focused in particular on using line in creatively challenging ways, and featured contributions by Raoul De Keyser, Sol LeWitt and Richard Long, amongst others. The work consists of several thousand stalactites that simulate candles and engender a cave-like experience.

about Hemali Bhuta

Hemali Bhuta's multi-disciplinary practice is primarily concerned with the notion of an 'in between' or 'transitory' space and the elements that contain or create those spaces. Often referencing rituals, both religious and domestic, Bhuta uses materials, ranging from wax and alum to soap, to transform spaces and to draw attention to its often forgotten corners and architectural details. In this way, her site-specific installations mostly function both as ephemeral objects and documentation in ways that can seem contradictory.

Hemali Bhuta has been part of exhibitions at venues such as ARKEN, Copenhagen; MAXXI, Rome; Thomas Erben Gallery, New York; and Parasol Unit, London.
