Kathrin Sonntag

°1981, Berlin (DE) – lives and works in Berlin (DE)

In her objects, photographs, films, drawings and site-specific installations, Kathrin Sonntag portrays everyday situations and scenes injected with uncanny and unsettling details. As such, she deals with the issue of the view of banal objects and its transformation. Sonntag’s work is characterized by the cautious way of handling these examined items, evoking environments that are familiar yet oddly fraught and foreign. Similarities in shape and function are revealed, and sequences of associations are manifested amongst items that usually wouldn’t have been related to each other.

Kathrin Sonntag has had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; Aspen Art Museum, Aspen; and the Swiss Institute, New York. Her work has also been shown in several group exhibitions at venues such as Haus der Kunst, Munich; SculptureCenter, New York; Kunstmuseum, Bonn; and Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach. She participated at the 3rd Moscow International Biennial for Young Art in Moscow and the 4th Berlin Biennale.
