Hugo Scibetta

°1991, (FR) – lives and works in Grenoble (FR)

Hugo Scibetta’s work is located in a constant dynamic between the virtual and the real, between screen and material. Scibetta started his practice with a desire to dematerialize, producing almost exclusively pieces intended to be shown online. Today he tries to reconcile his interest in the virtual with a studio practice in which he produces actual objects.

Notions of archive, presence and temporality, but also of transformation and reinterpretation play an important role in his work. Scibetta uses the image as raw material: he searches and archives historial and contemporary images – mostly from other artists, whose aesthetics he then reuses and reinterprets via different processes.

Recently his work is focussed mainly on painting, based on the the idea that a screen is not so far from a canvas, both in its format as in the physical relationship that we have with it. Recent exhibitions, projects and screenings include 89+ at Luma, Zurich; Levy.Delval, Brussels; Google Cultural Institute, Paris; Museum of the Moving Image, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and Moderna Museet, Stockholm.
