about this work

As the title of the edition indicates, Digressions autour de l’Eruption du Mont Pelée (2013) is a photogram about an eruption of the active volcano Mont Pelée on the Caribbean island Martinique. Among others, this volcano destroyed in 1902 the former capital Saint-Pierre and its inhabitants (30.000 persons). Intrinsic to this non-fixed photogram is the unavoidable and slowly vanishing of its image. Digressions autour de l’Eruption du Mont Pelée was published by Meessen De Clercq in Brussels.

about Thu Van Tran

Using a precise and poetic visual language, Thu Van Tran raises questions concerning power relations in both physical and metaphorical perspective. Her approach is characterized by a dialectical tension, oscillating between lightness and gravity, balance and instability, transience and permanence. Van Tran engages a set of historical, political and literary references, visually linked to materials such as photosensitive paper, wood, latex or coloured inks.

Thu Van Tran has had several solo exhibitions, including Galerie Art et Essai, Rennes; Centre d’Art Villa du Parc, Annemasse; Galerie Martine Aboucaya, Paris; La Maison Rouge, Paris; Bétonsalon – Centre d’Art et de Recherche, Paris; and Musée des Beaux-Arts de Mulhouse. She also participated at Art Basel Statements in 2013.

Recently, her work was also shown in many group exhibitions, such as A Brief History of the Future, Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels; Presque la même chose (curated by Sandrine Wymann) at Kunsthalle, Mulhouse; Interprète (curated by Xavier Franceschi) at FRAC Ile-de-France, Paris; and Soudain déjà (curated by Guillaume Désanges) at Beaux-Arts de Paris. She also curated the show Duras Song at Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, together with Jean-Max Colard in 2014.
