The Tuners, 2005-2019 - Navid Nuur
about this work
This edition is part of an on-going series of works Navid Nuur has been working on since 2005, under the title The Tuners. These apparently randomly painted doodles are in fact informed by the unconscious or consciously made marks that people leave behind on the counters of stationery shops after trying out various pens. Collecting such test papers from around the world Nuur surprisingly, discovered that the marks made by customers have a lot in common: all had similar squiggly strokes. Using such mundane occurrences as a point of departure to explore the possibility for a universal language, the artist extracts something primal about these marks, a commonality that surely unites us that exists whatever language, alphabet or script we use.
While this limited edition interrelates with the colourful compositions which constitute the large scale paintings featured in the exhibitions, it also keeps its singularity of the random doodles with each copy being a unique variant hand-made by the artist.
