Anderswo: "Holz vor Holz", 2001 - Natalie Czech
about this work
This edition is part of a photographic series that was produced and shown as part of the last exhibition at the NAK's old space - before moving to its current location in the city park. The last exhibition at the Rudolfstraße appropriatelt dealt with abandonned architecture.
Natalie Czech's Anderswo shows a series of abandoned houses in the coal mining area of Garzweiler II. In a book about her work, her former teacher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf Thomas Ruff writes: "Once inhabited houses with manicured gardens are abandoned, dilapidated and show clear traces of destruction. Like a detective, Natalie Czech wanders through these buildings and captures the mortal remains of the inhabitants and their domestic life. The viewer tries to reconstruct the rooms and imagine its former inhabitants, envisioning once spent lives whose veracity can never be verified. More then documenting a life lived, these photographs are a mirror of the viewer's own memories."
