about Judith Bernstein

For 50 years Judith Bernstein has created expressive, erotic drawings and paintings that boldly critique militarism and machismo in a manner that is at once humorous and threatening. Referencing the subliminal, Bernstein’s work is a psychological amalgamation of sex, war and feminism in different orders and priorities. During the beginning of the feminist art movement in the 1970s, Bernstein was a founding member of A.I.R. Gallery in New York, the first to be devoted to showing female artists. She has also been involved in many activist organizations such as the Guerilla Girls, Art Workers’ Coalition, and Fight Censorship Group.
