about this work

This photograph is taken during the production of Yang Fudong's Yejiang/The Nightman (2011), and could be considered a high quality film-still. The film Yejiang / The Nightman Cometh is one of the few single-channel projections created by Yang Fudong in recent years. The setting looks like a stage set and shows a snow-covered landscape scene in a suggested theatre of war. An injured warrior in ancient Chinese armor is followed by three equally ghostly figures, clearly from mutually contradictory times and historical backgrounds. There is no narrative thread, no beginning and no end. Having appeared out of nothingness, the warrior departs the scene in the same way, riding away into the snow, unguided and aimless.

about Yang Fudong

Yang Fudong is considered one of China's most important contemporary artists. Drawing influence from his training as a painter and photographer, as well as the work of Jim Jarmusch, Yang’s films are sequences of slow-moving, tableau-like dreamscapes, more evocative of moods and impressions than any clear narrative.

Every one of his films and videos is about human being. In them Yang Fudong mostly depicts his own generation. Being in their late 20's and early 30's, these young people seem confused and appear to be hovering between the past and present. Indeed, Yang Fudong's work epitomises how the recent and rapid modernisation of China has overthrown its traditional values and culture. What is remarkable though, is how skilfully Yang Fudong balances this dichotomy to create works that are endowed with classical beauty and timelessness.

Fudong has has numerous exhibitions, including solo presentations in major institutions such as Parasol Unit, London, London; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; Castello di Rivoli,Torino and Kunsthaus Basel. Yang Fudong also participated in group exhibtions in venues such as Bozar, Brussels; Fondation LVHM, Paris; Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich and MCA, Chicago.
He also took part in various
prestigious international art events including: Sharjah Biennial, UAE; the 2007 Venice Biennial; and Documenta XI, Kassel.
