about this work

Özlem Altın was instantly drawn to Pas d’histoire, Pas d’histoire (No Story, No History), the solo exhibition by Belgian artist Joëlle Tuerlinckx at Witte de With in 1994. She asksed herself how to make Tuerlinckx’ work resonate in her own and whether this personal resonance and reflection could establish a platform that allows new perspectives or readings on how stories and histories are created and displayed. Altın, whose practice also encompasses painting and photography, often combines images gathered from different sources and re-contextualises them, uprooting them from their origin. She shares with Tuerlinckx a great interest in what she calls suspended objects and gestures. Much like Pas d’histoire, Pas d’histoire (No Story, No History) in 1994, Altın’s work No story, no consists of an open ended constellation of image and text.

This edition is part of a set that was produced in the context of Witte de With’s In Light Of 25 Years. On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, Witte de With examined its history, dedicating its ground-floor gallery to a series of commissioned presentations by a select group of contemporary artists. Each participant created an image-based work that analyzed certain sediments of contemporary art history. Presented on a large-scale double-sided light box these anniversary commissions were visible to the city day and night. Throughout 2015, In Light Of 25 Years functioned as a space for artists and curators to respond to developments in contemporary art, its landscape and possibilities, departing from Witte de With’s past program.

WDWXXV brings together the ten In Light Of 25 Years commissions. Presented in a slim Plexiglas box frame, inspired by the light box itself, this limited edition portfolio features ten high quality prints by the participating artists Özlem AltinWineke GartzCamille HenrotGermaine KruipMahonyRaimundas MalašauskasZin TaylorFreek WambacqLawrence Weiner, and Xu Zhen. about Özlem Altin

Özlem Altin’s artistic practice encompasses installations, photographs, collages and paintings. Working from a personal collection of pictures, she contrasts the commonalities and contradictions of the used images. Mostly they are found pictures taken from books, magazines or the internet and they feature the human body in states of exhaustion, passivity and dissolving subjectivity. Altin juxtaposes and combines the images with her own paintings, along with other objects, in order to create spatial installations that confront her viewers.

Among others, recent solo exhibitions of Özlem Altin include Witte de With in Rotterdam; Leopold–Hoesch–Museum in Düren; and the Fondazione Morra Greco in Naples. Her work was also shown in several group exhibitions at venues such as Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin; Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna; and Wiels in Brussels.

Altin also founded Orient Press in Berlin.
