about this work

Xu Zhen focused on the visual identity of Witte de With’s past exhibitions as well as its archive of posters. As such, this work brings to light not the artworks shown at Witte de With during the past twenty-five years, but rather the wording and design, which mediated them. The archive is read and revealed as a sprawling visual poem made up of fragments and traces of voices past. Xu Zhen extracts fonts and layouts from their original contexts and reproduces them. Here he shows images taken from the Metal Language series (2012) showing select sentences from political caricatures.

This edition is part of a set that was produced in the context of Witte de With’s In Light Of 25 Years. On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, Witte de With examined its history, dedicating its ground-floor gallery to a series of commissioned presentations by a select group of contemporary artists. Each participant created an image-based work that analyzed certain sediments of contemporary art history. Presented on a large-scale double-sided light box these anniversary commissions were visible to the city day and night. Throughout 2015, In Light Of 25 Years functioned as a space for artists and curators to respond to developments in contemporary art, its landscape and possibilities, departing from Witte de With’s past program.

WDWXXV brings together the ten In Light Of 25 Years commissions. Presented in a slim Plexiglas box frame, inspired by the light box itself, this limited edition portfolio features ten high quality prints by the participating artists Özlem AltinWineke GartzCamille HenrotGermaine KruipMahonyRaimundas MalašauskasZin TaylorFreek WambacqLawrence Weiner, and Xu Zhen. about Xu Zhen

°1977, Shanghai (CN) – lives and works in Shanghai (CN)

Xu Zhen is a conceptual artist whose work often takes the form of provocative sculptures, installations and interventions that confront sociopolitical taboos in contemporary China and freely manipulate western expectations of Chinese art and commerce.

In 2009 Xu Zhen subsumed his individual artistic identity and transformed into MadeIn – a contemporary art creation corporate focused on the production of creativity, and devoted to the research of contemporary culture’s infinite possibilities. Subsequently in 2013, MadeIn launched a brand – Xu Zhen, redundantly making Xu a product of his own corporation.
