Daniel Sinsel

°1976, Munich (DE) – lives and works in London (UK)

Daniel Sinsel is a painter who often incorporates organic materials (e.g. clay, hazelnuts, etc.) into his canvases, thus attempting to translate perishable into durable materials. As he sees his work as part painting, part sculpture, Sinsel brings these different kinds of found objects together in tight, simple, yet detailed compositions by means of craft-based practices such as metalworking, ceramics, weaving and sewing. Through playing with spatial awareness and materiality, he is known for his combination of realism and subtlety, which frequently results in surrealist illusions that manipulate the viewer’s sense of perspective.

Daniel Sinsel has had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at Chisenhale Gallery, London; The Breeder, Athens; and Casa Maauad, Mexico. His work has been shown in several group exhibitions such as MoMA, New York; Hayward Gallery, London; Inverleith House, Edinburgh; and Hauser & Wirth, Zürich. He has also participated at the Liverpool Biennial in 2002.
