about this work

Glyph Nodes (2015) is a wall sculpture by Shana Moulton, produced in a edition of 25 unique variations. It consists of a hexagonal shape made in wood, of which the top is painted black and adorned with a series of colorful organic forms. The sides of the sculpture are painted in monochrome bright candy colors.

A "glyph" - from a Greek word meaning "carving" - is a graphic symbol that provides the appearance or form for a character within an agreed set of symbols, intended to represent a readable character. A "node" - from the Latin "knot" - is a term used in communication networks, signifying either a connection point, a redistribution point, or a communication endpoint. Both terms are frequently used in information technology.

about Shana Moulton

°1976, Oakhurst (US) – lives and works in New York and California (US)

Through her performances, videos, and multidimensional installations, Shana Moulton creates worlds at the threshold of absurdity and truth, catharsis and cliché, the material and the spiritual. The artist positions herself in the role of an individual moving with worry and wonderment through environments designed from autobiographical experiences, subconscious associations, and fantasy. Ascribing healing properties to the banal trappings of everyday life, Moulton’s works elicit a potent empathy on the part of the viewer that allows for these narratives to continue beyond the immediate experience of an artwork.

Shana Moulton had numerous solo exhibitions at venues such as Kunsthaus, Glarus; La Loge, Brussels; Yerba Buena Centre for the Arts, San Francisco; Bielefelder Kunstverein, Bielefeld and the Wexner Centre for the arts, Cleveland. Her work was also featured in several group exhibitions at international institutions, including Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; SFMoMA, San Francisco; Tate Modern, London; the Migros Museum, Zurich and ICA, London. Established in the field of video and performance, Shana Moulton has also performed at, among others, MoMa, New York; Tate, St-Ives; De Appel, Amsterdam; New Museum, New York and Performa 13, New York.
