about Seiichi Furuya

°1950, Izu (JP) – lives and works in Graz (AT)

The work of the Japanese photographer Seiichi Furuya revolves as intensely as ever around the figure of his deceased wife Christine, as he continually rearranges and re-issues these images. Combining portraits of her with pictures from their travels together and places of residence, these images are presented in ever-changing constellations and contexts. In addition to numerous exhibitions, five artist’s books have been released since 1989 under the collective title Mémoires, all of which are dedicated to the memory of his wife; a visual labour to preserve her memory.

Seiichi Furuya has had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at Museum Moderner Kunst, Vienna; Fotomuseum Winterthur; and Albertina Museum, Vienna. His work has been shown in several group exhibitions at venues such as The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; SFMoMA, San Francisco; and MoMA, New York.

Furuya also has been active in a wide range of projects: he was one of the founders and editors of the photography magazine, Camera Austria, and has also curated several exhibitions introducing Japanese photographers to Europe.

His work is present in many important public collections, including Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; MoMA, New York; and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
