about this work

Created on the occasion of his first institutional solo exhibition in the UK, Sean Snyder has produced a work specially selected from Index, a major new project by the artist that makes its debut at the ICA, London. In 2008, Snyder began the process of digitizing the archives that he has amassed while making his works and his exhibition contains a large number of photographs, which relate to this project. Untitled (CE-2331) (2009) is one of the artist's collection of images that document the re-formatting and eventual destruction of Snyder's physical archive - a process in which the artist's interest in the flux of information and images reaches its natural conclusion.

about Sean Snyder

°1972, Virginia Beach (US) – lives and works in Berlin (DE)

Sean Snyder is one of the most important proponents of the research-based practice that has emerged in the last decade, and is fascinated by the on-going life of documentary information and images, from the Cold War to the Iraq War. He takes the global circulation of data as the raw materials for his practice. In resistance to contemporary art's tendency to aspire to a mechanized consumer society, his investigations parody and mirror their processes.

Sean Snyder has had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and Portikus, Frankfurt. His work has been shown in several group exhibitions at venues such as New Museum, New York; CCA Wattis, San Francisco; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. He also participated at the 50th Venice Biennial in 2003.
