about this work

As with all his editions, Here we are (...) does not picture a charcoal drawing. Rinus Van de Velde's editions rather depict the photographs of the staged scenes on which his drawings are based - in this case a wall drawing that was made on the occasion of the group exhibition For The Time Being. Wall Paintings. Painted Walls at Kunsthalle Bielefeld in 2013.

about Rinus Van de Velde

°1983, Leuven (BE) - lives and works in Antwerp (BE)

Considered to be one of the most promising young artists in Belgium, Rinus Van de Velde has developed a practice that mainly results in several monumental, narrative charcoal drawings to tell one open story, which is part of a bigger, imaginary autobiography. On the basis of found photos or photosgraphs of staged scenes, Vande Velde has created a very personal universe through a combination of black and white images and texts that establish an accompanying context.

Rinus Van de Velde has had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at Kunsthalle Sao Paulo; CAC Malaga; Stedelijk Museum, Schiedam; and S.M.A.K., Ghent. His work has been shown in several group exhibitions at venues such as The Drawing Room, London; David Roberts Foundation, London; and at Palazza Nani Mocenigo in Venice during the 56th Biennale di Venezia in 2015 (together with Francis Alÿs and Song Dong). He has also participated at the Bucharest Biennial in 2012.

His work is represented in many important public collections, such as S.M.A.K., Ghent; M HKA, Antwerp; and Flemish Parliament, Brussels.
