about this work

Prem Sahib’s on-going series of tiled column works have a distinctly anthropomorphic presence, enhanced by their collective title Watch Queen (gay slang for those who prefer to watch rather than have sex, or who keep watch on behalf of others); the cold, repellent tiled surface stands for warm, soft flesh. In Outing (2015) Sahib’s Watch Queen is photographed in the park, seemingly awaiting a chance encounter.

Outing (2015) accompanies the solo show Side On by Prem Sahib at the ICA, London in 2015.

about Prem Sahib

°1982, London (UK) - lives and works in London (UK)

Prem Sahib's practice, which comprises sculpture, paintings, works on paper and performance, is informed by a language of display, embodying discrete formalism placed in choreographed relationships with one another. Often minimal and sparse in colour, Sahib’s works aim to produce an emotional reaction from minimalist language. Through objects, performances and installations, Sahib explores both formal and autobiographical themes, frequently relating to intimacy, sexuality, relationships, desire and community.

Recent solo exhibitions include Jhaveri Contemporary, Mumbai; Fiorucci Art Trust, Stromboli; and ICA, London. His work has been shown in several group exhibitions at venues such as Hayward Gallery, London; David Zwirner, London; David Roberts Art Foundation, London; and BALTIC, Newcastle. He also participated at the Gwangju Biennale in 2014.
