about this work

Matthew Brannon's work is inspired by everyday objects and disposable items. His prints frequently include images that would not look out of place in a cookbook, juxtaposed with unsettling or inappropriate sentences.

Oral Examination (2010) was published on the occasion of his solo exhibition Mouse Trap, Light Switch at Museum M, Leuven in 2010.

about Matthew Brannon

°1971, St. Maries (US) – lives and works in New York (US)

The artistic oeuvre of Matthew Brannon consists of paintings, spatial installations and sound works, but he is best known for his letterpress and silkscreen prints, which set up elusive relationships between recognizable images and texts. Inspired by everyday objects and disposable items, his prints frequently include images that would not look out of place in a cookbook, juxtaposed with unsettling or inappropriate sentences. His works often recall the language of advertising and posters – particularly from mid century America – and explore the potential of words and images to communicate but also to confound.

Solo shows of Matthew Brannon include Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Portikus, Frankfurt; Museum M, Leuven; and The Approach, London. His work has also been shown in numerous group exhibitions including MoMA PS1, New York; Denver Art Museum, Denver; Saatchi Gallery, London; and Bergen Kunsthall, Bergen. He also participated in the Whitney Biennal, New York in 2008.
