about this work

This edition consits of a small bag containing what appear to be special salted Cuban crackers - Galletas de Sal. These crackers are sold only in Cuba and are made in one unique factory, and of the simplest ingredients. The artists have cast 12 crackers in bronze for each unique pack, and each comes with a signed, numbered and dated label detailing the contents.

about Los Carpinteros

°1992 – artist collective founded in Havana (CU). They live and work between Havana (CU) and Madrid (ES)

Los Carpinteros is an artistic collective founded by Marco Antonio Castillo Valdes (°1971, Cuba), Dagoberto Rodríguez Sánchez (°1969, Cuba) and Alexandre Jesús Arrechea Zambrano (°1970, Cuba) in 1992. They chose the name for their collective to embrace the guild tradition of artisans and skilled laborers.

The deftly crafted -and often humorous- installations and sculptures made by Los Carpinteros may appear whimsical at first, yet every piece has an element of political commentary, mostly related to their personal experience and context. This dichotomy provides a vast resource with which they can be both playful and critical. Often described as ‘interrogative art’, their work examines the relationship between art and society, form and function, practicality and frivolousness.

What Los Carpinteros create is very much a conscientious response to places, spaces and objects, how they have been conceived, built, used and abandoned. As a collective, they observe and mentally digest their form and function, with the idea of displacing the given and altering that which is immediately recognisable.

Los Carpinteros have been the subject of worldwide solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey; Parasol Unit, London; England; Kunstverein Hannover; and Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea, Santiago de Compostela. They have also participated in group exhibitions at the Albertina, Vienna; New Museum, New York; MoMA PS1, New York; and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.

Their works are part important institutional collections of MOCA, Los Angeles; MoMa, New York; the Guggenheim Museum, New York; the TATE Gallery, London; the Museo de Bellas Artes, Havana, Cuba; the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain; and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Contemporary Art Foundation, Vienna, Austria.
