about Lili Dujourie

°1941, Roeselare (BE) – lives and works in Lovendegem (BE)

At the end of the 1960s, Lili Dujourie manifested herself as an artist through her first sculptures at a time when women were still a rarity in a men’s world. In the 1970s, Dujourie’s practice shifted into photography and video, wherein her naked body performs various sensual poses. In this way, she also raised gender- and identity-related issues, which were prevalent at that time.

Since the 1980s she has also created several sculptural installations, often made of drapery, satin, smoothed plaster folds, mirrors, gold leaf frames, torn fragments of photos, etc. Dujourie creates these sculptural forms for the passing of time, where the presence disappears into absence and whereby the contrast of hiding and showing originates out of her search for balance.

Over the past years Lili Dujourie has had several solo shows, including at S.M.A.K., Ghent & Mu.ZEE, Ostend; Leopold-Hoesch-Museum, Düren; Xavier Hufkens, Brussels; BOZAR (curated by Lynne Cooke), Brussels; Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporaneo, Sevilla; Kunstverein, Munich; Lisson Gallery, London; De Appel, Amsterdam and The Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin.

She has also shown her works in numerous group exhibitions, including Late Barbarians at Gasworks Gallery, London; Against Method, The Collection Seen by Gertrud Sandqvist, Generali Foundation Collection, Vienna; Women Artists Elles@centrepompidou, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Spirits of Internationalism, 6 European Collections 1956-1986, Van Abbemuseum, Rotterdam; Kunsthalle, Bern; and at Reina Sofia, Madrid. Dujourie has also participated at the Documenta XII in Kassel in 2007.
