about this work

To celebrate the opening of the group exhibition Keep Your Timber Limber (Works on Paper) (with contributions by Judith Bernstein, Tom of Finland, George Grosz, Margaret Harrison, Mike Kuchar, Cary Kwok, Antonio Lopez and Marlene McCarty) at ICA, London, Judith Bernstein has made her first flocked print since the 1970s, entitled Dick in a Head / Flocked Pink (2013). The print derives from an on-going series of drawings that refer to the idea that sex is in the head.

about Judith Bernstein

°1942, New Jersey (US) – lives and works in New York (US)

For 50 years Judith Bernstein has created expressive, erotic drawings and paintings that boldly critique militarism and machismo in a manner that is at once humorous and threatening. Referencing the subliminal, Bernstein's work is a psychological amalgamation of sex, war and feminism in different orders and priorities. During the beginning of the feminist art movement in the 1970s, Bernstein was a founding member of A.I.R. Gallery in New York, the first to be devoted to showing female artists. She has also been involved in many activist organizations such as the Guerilla Girls, Art Workers' Coalition, and Fight Censorship Group.

Judith Bernstein has had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at New Museum, New York and Studio Voltaire, London. Her work has been shown in several group exhibitions at venues such as MoMA PS1, New York; Hauser & Wirth, London and Zurich; and Whitney Museum, New York. Bernstein's work is included in major public collections such as MoMA, New York; Whitney Collection, New York; and Yale Art Gallery, CT.
