Ryan Gander

°1976, Chester (UK) - lives and works in London (UK)

Ryan Gander's complex and conceptual practice touches on an assortment of subjects and media, ranging from video, text and lectures to painting, animation and children's books. It is stimulated by queries, investigations or what-ifs, rather than strict rules or limits. One of his aims is to explore the systems with which we organize our lives; another is to question the parameters of artistic practice. Apart from language and storytelling, collaboration is at the heart of Gander’s work, although arguably every action he performs merely holds up yet another mirror to his ceaselessly mind-set.

Recent solo exhibitions of Ryan Gander include Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurla; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Museo Tamayo, Mexico City; Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Ikon Gallery, Birmingham; and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. His work has also been shown in numerous group exhibitions, at venues such as Hayward Gallery, London and ICA, London. Gander also participated at the Shanghai Biennale in 2012; the 12th Havana Biennial in 2014; documenta 13, Kassel in 2012; 54th Biennale di Venezia in 2011; and the Sydney Biennial in 2008.

Gander’s works are included in both international public and private collections including Tate Collection, London; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Museum Moderner Kunst, Vienna; and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam. Ryan Gander has also been awarded numerous prestigious prizes, among others, the Zürich Art Prize, the ABN Amro Art Price and the Dutch Prix de Rome for sculpture.
