about Gabriel Kuri

°1970, Mexico - lives and works in Los Angeles (US)

Gabriel Kuri’s oeuvre encompasses diverse media including sculpture, collage, installation and photography. A recurrent choice of everyday objects, especially materials related to consumption (e.g. receipts, plastic bags, cigarette butts, etc.), visualizes a complex vocabulary, which mostly deals with issues such as consumerism, economics, politics and temporality. In this way, Kuri integrates everyday life into his concise and formally restrained works, often laced with wry humour.

Gabriel Kuri has had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at ICA, Boston; Aspen Art Museum, Aspen; Bergen Kunsthall, Bergen; and M HKA, Antwerp. His work has been shown in several group exhibitions at venues such as the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Whitechapel Gallery, London; New Museum, New York; and MOCA, Los Angeles. He has participated in various biennials, including: the 54th and the 50th Biennale di Venezia, Venice, Italy (2011 and 2003) and the 5th Berlin Biennale, Berlin, Germany in 2008.

His work is represented in many important public collections such as Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; Tate Modern, London; and MCA, Chicago.
