Peter Coffin

°1972, Berkeley (US) - lives and works in New York (US)

Peter Coffin, whose practice includes photography, assemblage, performance, time-based media, installations, sound art, and sculpture in many forms, often uses art history, odd facts or obscure theories as a departure point for his surreal reinventions. Mostly expressing a sense of absurdity, his work engages with pre-conceptions about cultural ideals to challenge established perception and interpretation through the use of found, familiar, or fabricated sources popularized by the Surrealists.

Peter Coffin has had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at MoMA, New York; Smithsonian Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington; Aspen Art Museum, Aspen; and Palais de Tokyo, Paris. His work has been shown in several group exhibitions at venues such as Solomon R. Guggenheim, New York; MoMA PS1, New York; Tate Modern, London; and MOCA, Los Angeles. His work is also represented in many important public collections, such as MoMA, New York; Aspen Art Museum, Aspen; and Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit.
