Frank Benson

°1976, Virginia (US) - lives and works in New York (US)

Frank Benson is most known for his remarkably detailed life-like sculptures, whereby material production and process are of utmost importance. About his artistic practice, Benson says, “I enjoy backtracking through the manufacturing and distribution process which produces the readymade and intervening one or two steps before the object would become available to the public.” Benson’s sculptures are often described as static or abruptly frozen, always resisting the viewer’s intervention. In addition to his sculptures, his photographic works are occupied with the suspension of movement in both the form and function of the object.

Frank Benson has had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at Overduin and Kite, Los Angeles; Artspace, San Antonio; Locker Plant, Marfa; and Miami Art Museum, Miami. His work has been presented in several group exhibitions at venues such as New Museum, New York; Astrup Fearnley Museet, Oslo; Hayward Gallery, London; Aspen Art Museum, Aspen; and Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Turin. In 2012 Benson was Artist in Residence at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas.
