about this work

The edition displays a picture taken years ago at a natural history museum of a taxidermy Cassowary. Magdy's recurrent investigation of memory processes lead to his interest in taxidermy as a way of fixing recollections and therefore preventing them from fading. The Cassowary is the third tallest non-flying bird and one of the most colorful, it lives in New Guinea and parts of Australia and it is considered to be a vicious and agressive bird.

about Basim Magdy

°1977, Cairo (EG) – lives and works in Basel (CH) and Cairo (EG)

Basim Magdy’s films, photographs and paintings stage liminal spaces that make problematic the rigid structures of historical representations. Rather than a nostalgic gazing back in time, Magdy’s works propose a reassessment of our possible futures through a questioning of established readings of the past.

By underlining our daily conscious or unconscious forms engagement with historical discourses, his work points out our participation in the construction of collective readings of the past and projections for the future, therefore signaling our ability to participate in the shaping of the present.
