Andrea Büttner

°1972, Stuttgart (DE) - lives and works in London (UK) and Frankfurt am Main (DE)

Working in a variety of media and techniques (e.g. old-fashioned items such as woodcuts, glass painting and pressed flowers), Andrea Büttner references religious and spiritual themes in her practice. Furthermore she has explored the enduring myths that cloak the figure of the artist. Until recently, she mixed religious imagery with self-deprecating statements like "I want to let the work fall down" or "I don't know what to do", holding up a mirror to a contemporary culture of 'shamelessness'. In her more recent performance and video pieces, Büttner has explored similar subject matter.

Andrea Büttner has had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Museum Ludwig, Cologne; Tate Britain, London; and Whitechapel Gallery, London.

Her work has been shown in several group exhibitions at venues such as K21, Düsseldorf; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; and Aspen Art Museum, Aspen. She also participated at Documenta 13 in Kassel in 2012 and at the 29th Bienial de São Paulo in 2010. Buttner was awarded the prestigious MAX MARA prize in 2010.
