about this work

London-based Dutch artist Magali Reus’s interest in material as evidence of process is articulated in interlinked series of sculptures through the use of complex casting, moulding and weaving techniques, pitting the aggressive emptiness of manufacture against the slow diligence of handwork. This edition was commissioned to commemorate Reus’s first major institutional solo exhibition at South London Gallery, and is drawn directly from works within the exhibition.

about Magali Reus

°1981, The Hague (NL) – lives and works in London (UK)

Through the use of seemingly everyday objects and images, Magali Reus’ work initially evokes a sense of familiarity. It is upon closer scrutiny that the hidden complexity of her works unfolds. Reus adopts an almost obsessive approach of layering and repetition of visual elements, with a resultant crisis of definition that leads to her works to emerge as more personified or simply abstract entities.
