about this work

N.Y. (2010) is a print of a drawn-on picture that Koen van den Broek took during one of his many travels through The United States of America. Recurring themes throughout his work are details from snapshots of the urban landscape (a curb, a crack or a shadow), which are reduced to a geometric line pattern. In N.Y. van den Broek evokes a similar pattern by drawing lines upon the photograph.

N.Y. was published on the occasion of the solo show Curbs & Cracks by Koen van den Broek at S.M.A.K., Ghent in 2010.

about Koen van den Broek

Koen van den Broek is one of Belgium’s leading painters. The work bears strong affinities to European painting, while at the same time it inhabits the landscape of America’s open spaces and the language of American abstraction. He examines our experience of landscape, from close-up views of curbs and cracks in the urban scenery to huge breadths of countryside, which results in a geometrical structure of lines and colours. In this way, this subtle balance between form and colour, figuration and abstraction, strongly underlines the two-dimensionality of the painted surfaces.

Photographed snapshots of the everyday landscape, which Van den Broeck took during countless road trips, provide a sec and functional base for his artistic oeuvre. These emotionless images merely serve as a reminder and they register the lines, structures and curbs in the observed scenery. Van den Broek seems to be particular interested in the part of society whereto no one pays attention. As such, he frames the subject in a way that it becomes trivial or banal.

Koen van den Broek has exhibited widely, including solo shows at White Cube, London; S.M.A.K., Ghent; KMSKA, Antwerp; Bonnenfanten Museum, Maastricht; Museo Alta, Garda; and THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF THAT (collaboration with John Baldessari), Galerie Greta Meert, Brussels.

His work was also featured in several group exhibitions, including The Importance of Being, Contemporary art from Belgium in Latin-America at Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Buenos Aires & at Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade, São Paulo; Drawing Biennial, Drawing Room, London in 2015; Royal Academy, London; SFMOMA, San Francisco; Palazzo Fortuny in Venice; S.M.A.K., Ghent; M HKA, Antwerp; CAC, Vilnius; and Marta, Herford.
