about this work

Las Horas is a lithograph based on a collage of newspaper clippings. The artist selected parts of newspaper headlines describing references to time. Time and its passing play a mayor role in Jorge Macchi’s oeuvre.

about Jorge Macchi

The quality of the work of Jorge Macchi lies in its absolute and uncomplicated openness. With a minimum of form he achieves maximum awareness: the spectator should not try to interpret the work, but to experience it while watching. At first his images (watercolours, sculptures, installations, videos) seem fragile, poetic and sober, but they often imply a compressed and sometimes even impetuous emotionality. With his work, Macchi seems to wander through reality in a hypersensitive or in an apparent dreamily way. By means of emotional aspects like music, light and shadow, fading, openness and limitation, he often suggests the existence of a mysterious, uncanny, parallel world beneath the surface of the everyday banality.

His solo exhibitions include MAMBA, Buenos Aires; Kunstmuseum, Luzern; Centro Gallego de Arte Contemporáneo, Santiago de Compostela; Blanton Museum of Art, Austin; MHKA, Antwerp; and in S.M.A.K., Ghent. Macchi’s work was also included in the 4th and 6th Bienal do Mercosul in Porto Alegre; the 8th & 12th Istanbul Biennial; the 11th Lyon Biennial; and he also has been included in numerous museum exhibitions such as the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Kunsthalle Mulhouse Centre d’Art Contemporain, Mulhouse; Fondation Beyeler, Basel; and in Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. In 2005 Jorge Macchi, in collaboration with Edgardo Rudnitzky, represented Argentina at the Venice Biennale.

His work is also represented in many international public collections, including Tate Collection, London; MoMA, New York; CGAC, Santiago de Compostela; Museum of Modern Art, Buenos Aires; S.M.A.K., Ghent; MAMAC, Nice; and Fundación Arco, Spain.
