about this work

Persiana in Italian or Spanish, or persienne in French, refers to venetian blinds (another French term for them is jalousies) that are used inside or outside windows to protect a house's inhabitants from light or heat. They can conceal or reveal to the outside world what is going on within. The idea of a blind raises notions of suspicion, reserve, restraint, paranoia, deflection or privacy, but also of an artistic position that is guided by utmost precision. This screen print is based on a work of 2007 (167 x 286 cm), composed of plexiglas rectangles, arranged evenly in a rectangle and slightly offset from the grey painted wall. The work evokes the painting as a window and introduces questions about this work's status : how does it relate to what is withheld and what is revealed?

about Carla Arocha & Stéphane Schraenen

°1961, Caracas (VE) – lives and works in Antwerp (BE) / °1971, Antwerp (BE) – lives and works in Antwerp (BE)

The collaboration between Belgian artist Stéphane Schraenen and Venozolean artist Carla Arocha began in 2005. Their works evoke many relationships with preceding movements in art, mostly related to Modernism (e.g. Minimalism, etc.) and its progeny later in the 20th century (Op Art, etc.). Their installation sculptures are flat and composed of many small components, but they can be perceived as monumental and emphatic.

Carla Arocha & Stéphane Schraenen have had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at FRAC Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand and CAB de Burgos, Burgos, amongst others. They have also shown work in several group exhibitions at venues such as Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis; Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Brussels; National Art Museum of China, Bejing; and Parasol Unit, London.

Their work is present in many important public collections such as MoMA, New York; MCA, Chicago; M HKA, Antwerp; and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.
